The Institute of Communication and Media Studies at St Joseph’s University provides students with knowledge, skills, and experiences that will enable them to have successful lives and careers. It has a long history of excellence in teaching and research. Since its inception in 2008, Institute began striving to provide diversity and a focused approach depending on the student’s needs and goals.
At ICMS, we study the ways that communication techniques and technologies shape who we are, how we govern ourselves, and what kinds of cultures we inhabit. We embrace both media theory and media practice. Over the years, we’ve trained scholars who’ve reshaped their fields and entered into the field of journalism, among others.
We are living in an Information Society, in which a large number of the people are information workers; they produce information and they feed on information. More appropriately, it is a Communication Society, in which everything is molded in terms of communication. If you are not a communication worker -at least in your own little way- you don’t belong to the 21st century. Addressing this reality, the Institute of Communication & Media Studies (ICMS) strives to train our students become effective communication managers, who manage communication content meaningfully and efficaciously.
To this effect, currently we have five dedicated communication programs – three at the under graduate (UG) level and two at the post graduate (PG) or masters. The UG programs – Bachelor of Art in Visual Communication (BA-VC or BVC for short), Bachelor of Vocation in Visual Arts and Filmmaking (BVoc-VMF), and Bachelor of Vocation in Digital Arts and Animation (BVoc-DMA) deal in contemporary media technologies and platforms, bringing in the best academically and professionally. We have best of teachers from academia and industry. They go out of their way to accompany you in your academic, professional, and human endeavors. No doubt our students have won laurels at the national and international level. These students are our ambassadors. You check it out! The two PG Programs (the senior most of our Communication offerings - MA in Journalism & Mass Communication, and the junior most of them - MA in Advertising & Public Relations) are very special. While the former has consistently been rated one of the top PG programs in Journalism and Communication in the country, the latter became a sensation among students all over India in its very first year. It is a one-its-kind program in the entire country, for it is entirely taught and anchored by the industry professionals as adjunct faculty. And you know what it can do you when the academia works so closely with the industry! That is the miracle you see here in ICMS. Welcome then, be a part of ICMS and the College; take shelter under the wings of our “cool teachers,“ be guided by their friendly care and concern; take lessons from our industry professionals in animation, film, photography, graphic design, journalism, advertising, public relations, and be challenged. Know that you have redefined the field of communication. Welcome.
Traveling thousands of kilometres away from home was a thrilling for me. The opportunity to visit Ostrava, Czech Republic, as a student of St. Joseph’s university for a workshop on the worldwide anti-cyberbullying initiative was truly a transformative experience. Over the course of 14 days, I found myself feeling right at home in Ostrava. One of the highlights was attending a theatre workshop where we explored how theatrical techniques can effectively address serious issues such as cyberbullying and hate speech online.
We also had the privilege of conducting workshops for the local youth in Trimec city, delving into topics like internet safety through engaging discussions and creating informative posters. Interacting with participants from countries like the Czech Republic, Portugal, Philippines, and Ukraine enriched our understanding of different cultures.
Personally, witnessing snow for the first time felt like stepping into a fairy tale. I am immensely grateful to Institute of Communication and Media Studies (ICMS) of our university, and the director, Fr. Rego for this opportunity. I extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone at ICMS for making this journey possible.
