We live in a world where the use of statistical data is pivotal to comprehending many issues around us. The Department of Statistics in St Joseph’s College was established in 2010. The Department of Statistics is committed to excellence in teaching and equipping students to become practicing Statisticians. The Department provides a platform for the students to analyze real-life data, draw conclusions, and support conclusions by explaining the reasoning behind them. The Department also offers two certificate courses namely “Statistics using SPSS and MS Excel” and “Data Science and Analytics”. The programme also includes internships and projects with analysis of real-life data. The main objectives of the department are to acquaint students with various statistical methods and their application in different fields, cultivate statistical thinking among students, develop skills in handling complex problems in data analysis and research design, and prepare students for future courses having quantitative components.
The department aims to instill scientific temper, analytical skills, and intellectual vigor among students, so that they may contribute to the needs of society. The department aims to provide students with life-oriented education through projects of social relevance. The department is offering eight papers in six semesters for the students. These papers introduce basic statistical tools needed for postgraduate study in statistics/applied statistics. These papers are designed to impart the learning of statistical methods and tools, which is expected to improve students’ ability to analyse various types of real-life data. Introduction to Probability and Statistics and theoretical probability distributions are papers that help students to acquire basic knowledge in statistics, understand the importance of statistics, and will provide students with basic knowledge of probability models and their applications in real-life problems. The papers Statistical Inference- I and Statistical Inference -II provide basic knowledge of estimation theory.
“Wonder why I wonder
Why wonder? I wonder..”
We believe that this sense of wonderment, thirst for knowledge and wisdom is innate to all human beings. This forms the cornerstone of the philosophy of the School of Physical Sciences that comprises of the Departments of Physics, Mathematics, Electronics and Statistics of St Joseph’s University. We use these subjects as our tools to nurture logical reasoning ability, a sense of wonderment and scientific temper among our students.
The Department of Mathematics has nearly a century of history, being one of the first science departments to be started in the erstwhile St. Joseph’s College (now St Joseph’s University). The youngest department in this school is the Department of Statistics. All these departments, however, are at the forefront of knowledge creation and dissemination in their respective fields. Many of the teachers are active researchers in diverse fields like Astrophysics, Number Theory, Markov Chains, Internet of Things etc. Our faculty members are sought after by other institutes and departments as resource persons for various teacher training programmes, conferences, seminars and workshops. Some of them are part of the Board of Studies of other universities and colleges, as we believe that together we can grow.
Our alumni and alumnae are spread far and wide around the globe. Some of them are eminent scientists, researchers and entrepreneurs in India and abroad. Some others are delivering yeomen service for the upliftment of the poor and downtrodden the world over. We are proud of all of them and of the fact that they are all true Josephites, upholding the motto of our university Fide et Labore (Faith and Toil).
We welcome all of you to be a part of this great adventure at the School of Physical Sciences…
