The Department of Zoology ever since its inception in 1957 was actively involved in teaching Zoology for undergraduate degree programmes in combination with other disciplines viz., Chemistry, Botany, Zoology (CBZ); Microbiology, Chemistry, Zoology (MCZ); Chemistry, Environmental Science, Zoology (CEZ), Chemistry, Zoology, Biotechnology (CZBT) and Biochemistry, Botany and Zoology (BBZ). Now the Department offers Zoology in combination with Botany, Biochemistry, and Chemistry. The Faculty unites the disciplines of General Zoology, Cell Biology and Genetics, Human Anatomy- Physiology, Developmental Biology, Ecology, Ethology, and Evolutionary Biology. The Zoology Department has several excellent teaching facilities including well-equipped laboratories with instruments like thermal cycler, Insect culture facilities, and a Museum of specimens. The Department has ten faculty, two Associates, and eight Assistant professors. All courses are taught by lecture and practical work.
Co-curricular courses offered by the department include a choice-based credit system- A Journey into the Animal World and Human Life and certificate courses on “Urban ecology and pollution abatement technologies”, “Biodiversity, Wildlife and Conservation biology” and “Entomology”. Students will undertake a research project as part of certificate courses which can take place in the labs in the department or out in the field. Graduates are working on a wide range of projects/internships in reputed research institutions. The department encourages the popularization of science by conducting training and teaching activities through the Natural Science Association (including Conferences/ Seminars/webinars/Workshops/lectures).
The School of Life Sciences focuses on offering students, the opportunity and resources, to dive deep into understanding the science of “life” and using that knowledge to uncover research ideas that can better the world we live in. Our commitment lies in inculcating an interest in students to explore the world of life sciences and contribute to this rapidly expanding field. We aim to create a conducive environment where we encourage students to tap into their full potential and prepare them for academia, industry, and the productive application of their knowledge in everyday life.
The School consists of six departments, namely Botany, Biotechnology, Environmental Science (ES), Food Science and Technology (FST), Microbiology and Zoology. We offer Undergraduate (UG) and Postgraduate (PG) courses in Botany, Biotechnology, ES, Microbiology and Zoology. The PG course in Biotechnology was started last year and we had a myriad of students apply for the course. We are very excited to be starting our PG courses in Zoology and ES this academic year. The various departments ensure that the knowledge of our students is not limited to textbooks and manuals. The courses include ample practical work along with lectures which are made as interactive and interesting as possible. Furthermore, the School encourages students to collaborate with various institutes and organisations for internships, summer fellowships and dissertations for Master’s students. Together with the experience in our well-equipped laboratories and various opportunities for collaborations outside, our students can have holistic development and be ready to take on real-life situations.
The School is proud of the excellent faculty members across all our departments. The members ensure that they regularly engage themselves in equipping the latest skills in their subject-specific domains of interests and keep abreast of latest technology by attending faculty development programmes, workshops, seminars, and conferences. Each department also runs several clubs for UG and PG students to be a part of. Students are not only encouraged to participate in various club competitions, talks, field trips, and events but also showcase their leadership qualities by being part of the club committee. The clubs are a great way to connect with students from different departments and provide an opportunity to learn about other branches of life science. The principle of science is collaborating the knowledge of one field with another, and the club activities are a first step towards that.
The School is proud to be the alma mater of innumerable students who are very successful and recognized in their respective fields. Time and again, we hear stories from our alumni about how they use the skills and knowledge they gained at St. Joseph’s University and apply it in further study and work in order to achieve more and create an impression. It gives us immense joy to see our students find their passion and excel in their work. We are proud of the quality of education we provide at the School of Life Sciences because it is education that does not end when you graduate with a degree but education that lasts for a lifetime!
