Department of Biotechnology

If you want to discover what Biotechnology is all about, you are at the right place. We at St Joseph's have established state-of-the-art laboratories, supported by a strong curriculum. Our students are offered organised lectures, innovatively designed practical sessions, interesting lesson plans, self-learning activities, science-based co-curricular activities, credit courses, workshops, and International collaborative courses. All in all, this makes Biotechnology learning fun and helps our students integrate this into future careers.  We have come 20 years since inception and have been funded by the DBT (Dept. of Biotechnology, Government of India) Star College scheme since 2014 and have been elevated to Star College Status grants in 2018. The Department is also funded by the Govt of Karnataka Vision Group for Science and Technology (VGST) through the Centre of Innovation in Science, Engineering and Education (CISEE) Grant’s project to augment science teaching at the undergraduate level. The laboratory is well equipped to conduct research in microbial screening and identification, plant phytochemistry, plant tissue culture, molecular marker technology, Drosophila-based assays and Bioinformatics. Our staff are highly accomplished and dedicated in supporting our students' learning needs. We strongly believe in focusing our students on target-oriented learning outcomes. Our postgraduate programme has an exclusive curriculum. If your dream is to fulfil a journey from an undergraduate to a postgraduate Biotechnologist, we would love to have you here.

Message from DEAN

The School of Life Sciences focuses on offering students, the opportunity and resources, to dive deep into understanding the science of “life” and using that knowledge to uncover research ideas that can better the world we live in. Our commitment lies in inculcating an interest in students to explore the world of life sciences and contribute to this rapidly expanding field. We aim to create a conducive environment where we encourage students to tap into their full potential and prepare them for academia, industry and productive application of their knowledge in everyday life.

The School consists of six departments, namely Botany, Biotechnology, Environmental Science (ES), Food Science and Technology (FST), Microbiology and Zoology. We offer Undergraduate (UG) and Postgraduate (PG) courses in Botany, Biotechnology, ES, Microbiology and Zoology. The PG course in Biotechnology was started last year and we had a myriad of students apply for the course. We are very excited to be starting our PG courses in Zoology and ES this academic year. The various departments ensure that the knowledge of our students is not limited to textbooks and manuals. The courses include ample practical work along with lectures which are made as interactive and interesting as possible. Furthermore, the School encourages students to collaborate with various institutes and organisations for internships, summer fellowships and dissertations for Master’s students. Together with the experience in our well-equipped laboratories and various opportunities for collaborations outside, our students can have holistic development and be ready to take on real-life situations.

The School is proud of the excellent faculty members across all our departments. The members ensure that they regularly engage themselves in equipping the latest skills in their subject-specific domains of interests and keep abreast of latest technology by attending faculty development programmes, workshops, seminars, and conferences. Each department also runs several clubs for UG and PG students to be a part of. Students are not only encouraged to participate in various club competitions, talks, field trips, and events but also showcase their leadership qualities by being part of the club committee. The clubs are a great way to connect with students from different departments and provide an opportunity to learn about other branches of life science. The principle of science is collaborating the knowledge of one field with another, and the club activities are a first step towards that.

The School is proud to be the alma mater of innumerable students who are very successful and recognized in their respective fields. Time and again, we hear stories from our alumni about how they use the skills and knowledge they gained at St. Joseph’s University and apply it in further study and work in order to achieve more and create an impression. It gives us immense joy to see our students find their passion and excel in their work. We are proud of the quality of education we provide at the School of Life Sciences, because it is education that does not end when you graduate with a degree but education that lasts for a lifetime!
