About the Programme

Master of Arts (MA) in Journalism and Mass Communication WITH THREE SPECIALISATIONS

MA Journalism and Mass Communication (MA - MCJ) is a two-year intensive programme offering THREE SPECIALISATIONS (from the 2024 batch): i) Advertising and PR/ Corporate Communications, ii) Multimedia Journalism, Content Production, and design, and iii) Visual Storytelling on Film and Television platforms including the digital.

This specialising program offers a wide range of courses in the Mass Communication domain. The programme offers a myriad of options for career choices in the field. Underpinned by the latest pedagogical practices of discussions, industry interactions, and research, this programme aims to develop a holistic environment for students to inculcate the best industry and academic practices, and be equipped with suitable career opportunities.

Selected candidates must first update the following documents on their admission portal before the interview. The admitted students must submit the original documents at the Admin Office:

  • Class 10th Certificate (High School) and Marks Card
  • Class 11th Certificate and Marks Card
  • Class 12th Certificate (Senior Secondary School) and Marks Card
  • Undergraduate Marks Cards and Convocation Certificate
  • Transfer Certificate from last qualified institution
  • Migration Certificate if the candidate is outside Karnataka state
  • Two passport-size photographs and one stamp-size photograph in formal dress with a white background
  • Two Photocopies of the Online Payment Receipt
  • Valid ID proof such as Aadhaar Card / PAN Card / Voter ID Card

Candidates belonging to any of these categories -PIO / OCI / SAARC / FOREIGN NATIONALS-must submit the following documents:

  • Photocopy of Passport and Visa Details
  • Copy of PIO / OCI card (whichever is applicable and available at the time of admission)
  • Certificate of Medical Fitness from an approved medical practitioner accredited by the Medical Council of India
  • Resident Permit (If available)

Entrance Test-cum-panel interview for i) MA- Journalism & Mass Communication  will be held on 14 April 2024. This will be ONLINE.

Admission process: The applicants must fill in complete information on the online application form and upload all required certificates (whatever is available) and photos.

Selection process: The shortlisted candidates will be called for an interview. There are two rounds in the interview. Once the final interview is over, candidates have to pay their programme fee within 48 hours, and the mode of payment must be online.

Entrance Test: SJUET 2024 Syllabus
Online entrance test, followed by interviews and portfolio discussion (if the candidate has)
Mode: online
Syllabus: Specific material for reference/reading will be emailed to the shortlisted candidates
before the exam.
Candidates will be tested based on:
a. General knowledge and program aptitude (20 Marks)
b. Language, grammar, and logic (15 Marks)
c. Creativity, critical thinking skills and composition (15 Marks)

  1. Journalism graduates who have secured 50% of marks in Journalism (optional subject) at the degree, non-Journalism graduates with at least 50% marks in the aggregate of all the optional subjects at the degree.
  2.  Candidates appearing for the final semester undergraduate examinations in April-May 2024 may apply with the marks of all the previous semesters.
  3. General: Candidates who have passed the three-year Bachelor’s Degree examination of Bangalore University or any other University considered equivalent thereto by the Government of Karnataka, with the respective subject as optional/major/special/main subject, are eligible for admission to the programme provided they have secured a minimum of 40% marks in the aggregate of all the subjects (including English and Languages) and 50% marks in the cognate subject or major subject.Note: SC/ ST/ Category I candidates having 5% marks less than that mentioned above are also eligible to apply.

  2. Instil Critical Thinking and Ethical Standards: To foster critical analysis of media practices and content, emphasising the importance of ethical standards in journalism, advertising, and visual storytelling.
  3. Enhance Digital Proficiency: To ensure students are well versed with the latest digital technologies and analytical tools that are reshaping journalism, advertising, PR, and media production.
  4. Promote Research and Strategic Insight: To develop skills in media-related research methodologies, enabling the creation of strategic communication campaigns.
  5. Cultivate Creative and Narrative Skills: To nurture storytelling abilities across mediums, with a focus on innovative narrative techniques in journalism, advertising, and film.

At the end of this Programme the students should be able to:

  • Specialise either in Advertising & PR or as journalists  & content producers, or Visual Media Storytellers in TV, film and/ or social media.
  • Face the future with confidence in the communication industry
  • Develop a sound understanding of communication theories and concepts. 
  • Equip themselves with strong theoretical as well as practical skills required to perform storytelling across various media. 
  • Be responsible media persons with strong ethics and values.
