About

The Department of Chemistry of SJU, established in 1927, is the largest science department in the Institution. Over the last nine decades, the Department has built up its reputation as one of the best in its field as far as imparting education in Chemistry is concerned. It offers undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD programmes in Chemistry. The Department has vastly experienced, well-qualified and highly dedicated faculty to mentor students and guide them.

The Department has a well-established research centre equipped with modern scientific instruments. Some of the analytical facilities, the Department is proud of having, includes AAS, GC, HPLC, PXRD, IC, AFM, spectrometers, emission spectrometers and electrochemical workstations.

Vision

The Department aims to achieve global standards of quality in maintaining academic excellence by being proactive and open to new opportunities and challenges in the frontiers of Chemistry. The endeavour of the Department is to produce brilliant young chemists, who, by their scientific knowledge, skills, and social commitment would act as catalysts to bring about positive changes for the benefit of humanity.

Mission

  • To promote among our learners the skills of analytical thinking, experimentation, and application of the knowledge gained.
  • To promote the habit of scientific enquiry and research among our students.
  • To create in our students a concern for the environment and develop appreciation for Green Chemistry.
  • To prepare our students for life in the larger community.

Message from the Dean

School of Chemical Sciences St Joseph’s University

Dr Nalini G Sundaram

[email protected]

The School of Chemical Sciences comprises of the Department of Chemistry and the Department of Biochemistry. The Department of Chemistry was established in 1927, and the Department of Biochemistry was started in 2020. The School offers Undergraduate, Postgraduate Chemistry (Organic and Analytical), and Ph.D. programmes in Chemistry and Undergraduate programme in Biochemistry. Together, the School has built up its reputation as one among the best in the country, in imparting quality education in the domain of Chemical sciences.

The school is proud of its richly experienced, well qualified and highly dedicated faculty. The syllabi of all the courses are carefully designed and modified periodically to help students develop analytical thinking. The implementation of RBPT (research-based pedagogical tools) and project work for PG and UG students have created great interest and creative thinking in Chemistry, putting education into action. Many of the student projects have been published in reputed journals and/or presented at National / International conferences.
