Activity to link drug action to concepts learnt in Chemical BiologyClass Activity27-02-2026An activity for Chemical Biology paper in VI semester BSc was based on medicine slips that come along with medicines. They were collected by Dr Shobha from various pharmacy shops across Bengaluru. Students were asked to choose any one and prepare a write up based on the directions given. Assessment rubrics was also shared with students. The Outcome of the activity was that the students had to include all the concepts learnt in Chemical Biology paper while preparing the write up. The students learnt to limit the number of words, refer original papers, books and quote citations. A sample of the activity by one of the students is uploaded.
Research based Pedagogical Tools (RBPT)-research based experiment design in Biochemistry lab in VI semesterClass Activity17-02-2026RBPT sessions are designed as a part of chemistry practical curriculum. During practicals students design their own experiment after referring to the literature based on the skills and concepts learnt in that theory and practical paper. Several innovative ideas came from students which can solve many a real life problems and add greener aspects to experiments in chemistry. Ex; A group designed a low cost and a portable nebulizer. A sample chart prepared by students for an experiment where they suggested a herbal extract as an efficient indicator for various acid-base titrations instead of synthetic compounds as indicators.UG
Review paper based learning-III semester MSc organic ChemistryClass Activity28-08-2025III semester -MSc Organic Chemistry syllabus has a theory paper titled ‘Retrosynthesis and modern aspects of organic chemistry’ which includes study on chosen two review papers on related topics. Since 2019 and till date, as a part of the curriculum and activity for the paper, the students are divided into groups for both the papers based on their choice of the paper. They study each review paper in groups and present a part of the paper as seminar. The teacher moderates the sessions and explains the concepts missed out during presentation for the clarity of students. Outcome of the activity: Students learn to understand the language of research papers and concepts related to the curriculum but not in the curriculum. They learn to prepare for presentations, overcome stage fear and keeping up time allotted for presentation. Group study and peer learning are also the other highlights of the activity. The scores were treated as activity-II. In 2025 odd semester the student presentations happened between 28/8/2025 and 9/9/2025. Two sample ppts prepared by students and used for presentation are uploaded.
Industry visit and MOUIndustry Visit18-02-2025Dr Shobha and Dr Libi visited Chariton Research Institute in Industrial area, Peenya, Bengaluru on 7th January 2025. Dr Kumar Andanappa explained the industrial research and testing of samples that happens at the institute and the internship possibilities for both UG and PG. As a result of this visit, an MOU was signed between Chariton Research Institute and SJU on 18th February 2025.UG and PG
Industry visit with MSc studentsIndustry Visit11-03-2024Dr Shobha, Dr Pramod and Dr Anchal arranged an industrial visit to Prayoga Institute of Research on 11/3/2024 with I and II year MSc students of chemistry. The purpose of the visit to give an exposure to industrial research activities, instruments used for advanced research. A report was prepared based on the feed back of the students.
Industry visitIndustry Visit21-02-2024Dr Shobha and Dr Libi attended Mercedes Benz Sustainability Garage at Prayoga Institute of Research. The purpose of attending the workshop was to introduce the green initiatives of the department of chemistry in particular and the SJU in general. The take away points were a few other greener aspects which can be implemented in the curriculum of chemistry, both theory and practicals.UG
