Director's Message

For more than seven decades, the St. Joseph’s University Gents Hostel has been more than a place to stay. Since its beginnings in 1948, generations of young men have passed through its rooms, corridors and shared spaces. Many have gone on to become accomplished professionals and responsible citizens, carrying with them not only memories of their student years, but also friendships, values and experiences that have shaped their lives. The hostel is truly a part of the living history and heritage of St. Joseph’s University.

Today, we live in a world where it is increasingly easy to live individually, even while remaining constantly connected. Young people may have hundreds of digital connections and yet struggle to build deep and meaningful relationships. In such a context, a hostel has a special role to play. It is a place where we learn the art of living with others.

One of the greatest strengths of our Gents Hostel is its rich diversity. Students come from different parts of India, speak different languages, belong to different cultures and religious traditions, and bring with them different ways of seeing and experiencing the world. We also welcome students from other countries. This diversity is not simply something we accommodate; it is an opportunity for education in itself. Living together helps us move beyond stereotypes, discover one another's cultures, appreciate differences, and learn that harmony does not require everyone to be the same.

Here, a room may be private, but life is never meant to be lived alone. The dining table, playground, corridors, study spaces and common moments become opportunities to meet people who are different from us, share our joys and struggles, listen to one another, offer support and learn to care. Friendships formed here can become some of the most enduring gifts of university life.

Our vision for the hostel goes beyond providing comfortable accommodation. We want every student to grow in academic excellence, personal responsibility, self-care, moral maturity, healthy relationships and concern for others. Living away from home is itself an opportunity to learn: to manage one's time, care for one's space, make responsible choices, respect differences, handle conflicts, seek help when needed, and gradually take ownership of one's life.

This is deeply connected with the Jesuit tradition of forming the whole person. Education does not end in the classroom. Character is also formed in the ordinary moments of living together, how we speak to one another, how we respond when someone is struggling, how we share what we have, and how responsibly we use the freedom entrusted to us. The Gents Hostel is therefore not simply a home away from home. It is a community where young men encounter diversity, discover friendship, learn responsibility, and are invited to become men for and with others.

As Director, I warmly invite every resident to make this hostel a place where everyone feels welcomed, respected and supported. May the rich legacy of this hostel continue through you, not merely in the achievements you accomplish, but in the persons you become and in the lives you touch. May these years be remembered not only for the degrees you earn, but for the friendships you form, the differences you learn to appreciate, the responsibilities you embrace, and the person you become.
