Research based pedagogyClass Activity18-08-2022Regulation of Organismal Regeneration: Planaria 16-17th November 2021 Introduction: Manohar GM Talk and Demo: Anirudh CS (Doctoral student @ inStem, NCBS, Bangalore) The planaria labs were planned to give the Biotechnology masters students (1st Semester) a first exposure to working with a complex multicellular organism. The organism was introduced to the students by Manohar GM in the Biotechnology lab at SJC. He gave a very interesting talk and had a wide-ranging Q&A session with the students, in which the students participated enthusiastically. In the afternoon session, Anirudh CS gave an live online demonstration of planaria handling and the regeneration assay. He provided the students with many tips and practical solutions to problems that they might face. The session also included a discussion on possible experiments that could be done using the regeneration assay. Four species of planaria were sourced from the Dasaradhi Lab at NCBS, Bangalore. The students, in four groups (8-10 students each), came up with questions, experimental plans and detailed data analysis which were then discussed with the faculty of the Biotechnology Department. Some of the experimental plans included: 1. Effect of mild and strong magnetic fields on planaria regeneration 2. How the site of sectioning influenced regeneration 3. Effect of metal ions on planaria regeneration 4. Modulation of the Wnt pathway during planaria regeneration The students performed the experiments under the supervision of their teachers and continued to take daily measurements for 2-3 weeks depending on their experimental paradigm and made meticulous notes and observations. These they presented to the faculty in charge on the 25th of January, 2022, online, via MS Teams, as the third wave of COVID-19 had led to the reintroduction of restrictions and lab access Behavioural and Developmental genetics: Drosophila 21-23rd December 2021 Talk and Demo: Deepti Trivedi (Drosophila facility leader @ NCBS, Bangalore) The drosophila labs were conceived, following discussion with Dr Trivedi, to give students the scope to plan and execute molecular cell biological experiments on a genetically tractable organism. This was intended to be a mini-project where students come up with their own ideas and executed them in the lab. Dr Trivedi and her colleagues at the Fly facility in NCBS held a 2 day workshop (21st and 23rd December, 2021) online on MS Teams. They introduced Drosophila as a model organism and discussed its advantages in molecular genetic research. They also demonstrated multiple simple assays and fly strains that could be used to probe various physiological factors. The students, in groups of five, were given two days to discuss the mini-project and come up with an experimental plan. These were then presented by individual groups to their peers, the faculty in-charge and Dr Trivedi, which lead to a hearty discussion and constructive suggestions. 1. Neural assays in wildtype and ‘rut’ mutant drosophila 2. Memory retention in the larval stages of drosophila 3. To analyze feeding choices in drosophila Wildtype and mutant drosophila strains were obtained from the Fly facility at NCBS and distributed to individual groups. Due to the 3rd wave of COVID-19, these flies had to be reared at home by the students using homemade media. Some groups were able to complete selected experiments when the college reopened and will be submitting a report shortly.MSc Biotechnology students
Active learning and research based pedagogyClass Activity03-03-2022In BT6218, I teach the plant biotechnology section. I use the most recent UN –FAO report on State of the Food Security and Nutrition in the world (2021) to think about hunger, malnutrition and the relevance of plant biotechnology. I use a 2022 research paper to teach about various gene discovery techniques. I use recent newspaper articles and research papers and videos to initiate a debate about the benefits and risks of Bt Cotton. All details of current reading material give and student assignments can be found on MS teams, in the 19CZBT or 19CBBT teams, in BT6218-Plant Biotechnology channel
Research based pedagogyClass Activity04-02-2022In BT8421, I teach Research Methodology and Scientific writing using a very active learning approach. Details of individual active learning components for each Unit can be found in the syllabus. Students think of a research question, do a systematic review of literature, and write a research proposal. All details can be found on 21-BT MSc team on MS teams, in the BT8421-Research Methodology channel.MSc Biotechnology II semester students
Active LearningClass Activity15-09-2021For BT7321, we did a few introductory sessions beside the actual curriculum, which included how to read scientific papers, how to cite accurately etc. I conducted end of class quizzes after each unit, and the grades counted towards their CIA. Throughout the course, we looked at coronaviruses and its infection, wherever relevant. We had sessions on how to use an online game called FoldIt, which teaches more about protein structures and folding. For the BT7P2 lab, we used a research pedagogy approach that used both Planaria and Drosophila as model organisms, and students did their own mini projects to learn various aspects of cell and molecular biology. We also had experts from InStem and NCBS talk to our students about research using these model organisms. All details can be found in the 21-BT MSc team on MS teams, in the BT7321-Molecular Biology channel.MSc Biotechnology, Sem I students
Active LearningClass Activity21-06-2021For BT318, we look at classical papers by Watson and Crick, Avery et al, Griffith and analyse original data while learning DNA structure. We looked at the molecular biology of corona viruses as we learnt various units on genomes, replication, transcription etc. I also gave in-class analysis activities and MCQ based quizzes as revision after each unit. (All assignments can be viewed on MS teams, 20CBBT or 20CZB teams, in the Molecular Biology and Biophysics channel)Undergraduate CBBT and CZBT classes
