About Us


About Library

St Joseph’s University Library is one of the well-stocked university libraries in Karnataka. It regularly subscribes best and top national and international journals, periodicals/magazines and daily newspapers. It caters to the needs of more than 9000 undergraduate, postgraduate and research-level staff and students. The library is fully automated; it has two spacious reading halls and can accommodate two hundred and fifty users at any time.

The library operations are managed by the latest version of Koha Integrated Library Management System Software, and the digital library using DSpace software for digital library and institutional repository. The library is upgraded with barcode and Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) technology. The library is well equipped with all the modern facilities and resources (print and electronic) in the form of CDROMs, DVD-ROM, video cassettes, books, journals, etc. The library follows the Dewey Decimal Scheme of classification, AACR-II cataloguing code, and MARC-21 format for bibliographic data. Books are arranged on the shelves in numerical order from 000-999.

  • To acquire, manage, and disseminate information to students, faculty and research scholars.
  • To provide timely, accurate and current information to users for education, teaching and research.
  • To provide information services and access to bibliographic and full-text digital and printed resources to support the scholarly and informational needs of the institution.
  • To support and facilitate learning, teaching and research activities of the University.
  • To provide an appropriate and comfortable environment and facilities for the use of library services.

Mission

St Joseph’s University’s Arrupe Library and Information Centre provides quality resources and innovative services to stimulate creativity and intellectual curiosity and to facilitate learning and research. It is the hub of our institution. The information centre creates a welcoming, comfortable and cordial atmosphere for all its users. We strive to excel in acquiring and disseminating relevant educational and scholarly resources.


Membership

The membership of the library is open to Jesuit fathers, faculty members, research scholars, students and support staff of the university. The outside research scholars, eminent persons of the society, retired faculty members and staff members, and alumni/ae members of the university are also eligible for membership subject to the approval of the university authority.

General Rules And Regulations

  • A student who fails to return the books within 15 days will be fined Rs 2/- for each day beyond the due date, excluding Sundays and holidays.
  • The student must replace or pay for library books lost, damaged or defaced.
  • Loss of pages, mutilation and any other damage discovered on return of books will be assessed by the librarian, and the price of the latest edition of the book will be charged to the borrower.
  • Loss of a borrowed book from the library must be intimated to the Librarian immediately.
  • Books are issued for the exclusive personal use of the applicant.
  • Strict silence should be observed in the library.
  • Use of cell phones in the library is strictly prohibited.
  • Eatables and drinks are not allowed in the library.
  • Personal books and other belongings are not allowed inside the library, except notebooks/laptops, with the permission of the librarian.
  • Violation of library rules will result in strict disciplinary action.
  • Students must wear ID cards at all times.
  • Kindly cooperate and interact gently with library staff.
  • Sleeping, eating and having refreshments inside the library are strictly prohibited.
  • Check the library noticeboards regularly (Both inside and outside the library premises).
  • Students and staff members must settle all library dues to obtain Clearance Certificate from the Library Office upon completion of studies or duty.
  • DO NOT enter the library with your baggage. Keep them on the wooden shelves at the Gate Counter.
  • Any indiscipline in the library will lead to the cancellation of membership and/or serious disciplinary action.
  • Students should clear all library dues in time to obtain Hall Ticket/Admit Card before the Semester Exam.
  • Do take care of library books and journals.
  • ID card is NON-TRANSFERRABLE; using someone else’s ID is a punishable offence.

Book Bank

  • Books from the library book bank will be available on a long-term basis to deserving students.
  • All books borrowed from the book bank must be returned in good condition by the end of the academic year before the hall tickets are issued.
  • Books that are lost, damaged or defaced should be either replaced or the latest edition cost should be paid, which will be assessed by the librarian.

GUIDELINES FOR SELF-CIRCULATION KIOSK

Arrupe Central Library has implemented Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) enabled KIOSK; this latest technology is used to automate the book handling process, including check-out, and inventory maintenance.

The technology would allow the readers to utilise the service of self 'issue' and 'reissue' books without standing in a queue.

 

GUIDELINES FOR LENDING SECTION

The book borrowing facility is available only for the Fathers, faculty members, current students and staff members of the college. Student can borrow at most two books and faculty members can borrow at most ten books depending on the availability of the same in the library, at a time 10 days for student and thirty days for Faculty members, which are further renewable at most once in ten days slot for students and thirty days slot for faculty members. A delay in return is charged by Rs.2/- (Rupees two only) per day per book.

 

GUIDELINES FOR READING SECTION

  • The books marked as "REFERENCE" and periodicals (both journals and magazines) are meant only for reading consultation inside the READING ROOM ONLY, and cannot be taken out.
  • You will be allowed to take a maximum of THREE BOOKS at a time for study in the Reading Room.
  • Do not scatter the pages of newspapers when reading.
  • DO NOT misplace books while selecting from the shelves. After consulting books, return them at the counter.
  • Laptops and Palmtops are allowed in the library.
  • Books newly acquired are displayed in the New Arrival Section.

 

GUIDELINES FOR REPROGRAPHY SECTION

The reprographic facilities are available in Central Library for the students and faculty members, at a very nominal rate of Rs.1/- per A4 size impression (for photocopy) and Rs.2/- only per A4 size page (for printout). One internet-facilitated computer is directly connected to the photocopy machine for taking printouts of any online and also offline material. This section remains open from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM Monday to Friday, and 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM on Saturday.

The photocopy section is for library books only. The class notes, outside papers and outside books are strictly not to be photocopied here.
